Air hits the windshield and creates a high pressure area, forcing air under the hood. As Lee pointed out, nowadays most people just use the cowl induction hoods for clearance or aesthetics, not for actual airflow. WebEven at lower speeds, the cowl still ensures that cooler air gets to the engine environment. It does so by releasing hot air from under the hood of the car. It functions as an exhaust!
